Frequently Asked questions
Do I need Pilates experience to join a class?
Not at all. DRIFT Mat Pilates welcomes all experience levels, including complete beginners. Every class includes modifications and progressions so you can move at a pace that feels right for your body.
What should I bring to class?
Bring a yoga or Pilates mat, a water bottle, and comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. If you have any questions before class, don't hesitate to reach out.
What should I wear to Pilates?
Wear comfortable workout clothing that allows for a full range of motion. Many clients prefer leggings, athletic shorts, or fitted activewear. Grip socks are optional but encouraged.
Is Pilates a good workout?
Absolutely. Mat Pilates builds strength, improves flexibility, enhances balance, supports posture, and increases body awareness. While it's low-impact, don't be surprised if you feel muscles working in ways you never have before.
I'm not flexible. Can I still do Pilates?
Yes! You do not need to be flexible to start Pilates. In fact, many people begin Pilates specifically to improve their flexibility and mobility over time.
Is Pilates suitable for older adults?
Yes. Pilates is a low-impact form of exercise that can be adapted for many ages and fitness levels. If you have specific concerns or limitations, please consult your healthcare provider and let your instructor know before class.
How often should I take Pilates classes?
Most clients see noticeable benefits with 2–3 classes per week. Consistency is key, but even one class per week can help improve strength, mobility, and overall well-being.
What is the difference between Mat Pilates and Reformer Pilates?
Mat Pilates uses your body weight and small props to build strength, balance, and control. Reformer Pilates uses a specialized machine with springs for resistance. Both are effective, but Mat Pilates is an accessible way to experience the core principles of Pilates.
Is Pilates good for back pain?
Many people find Pilates helpful for improving posture, strengthening core muscles, and supporting spinal health. However, if you are experiencing pain or recovering from an injury, please consult your healthcare provider before participating.
Can Pilates help improve posture?
Yes. Pilates focuses on core strength, alignment, and body awareness, all of which contribute to better posture and more efficient movement patterns.
Will Pilates help me lose weight?
Pilates can be a valuable part of a healthy lifestyle by building lean muscle, improving strength, and supporting overall fitness. Individual results vary, and Pilates offers many benefits beyond weight loss.
What if I'm nervous about my first class?
You're not alone! Many first-time clients feel nervous before their first class. At DRIFT, our goal is to create a welcoming, supportive environment where every body feels comfortable and encouraged.
Is every body really a Pilates body?
Absolutely. Pilates is for every age, fitness level, and background. Whether you're new to exercise, a former athlete, or somewhere in between, you belong here.
Do you offer classes for athletes?
Yes. As a former Division I athlete, Maia understands the importance of strength, mobility, recovery, and injury prevention. Pilates can be an excellent complement to running, volleyball, hiking, cycling, strength training, and other athletic pursuits.
